4/19/05 Rams Fall to Yakima Mavericks

The Yakima Mavericks established themselves as the team to beat in the Evergreen Football League. Unfortunately, it came at the expense of the Wenatchee Valley Rams, who lost to the Mavericks 35-7 at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima Saturday night.

“They didn’t do anything we didn’t expect, but they played way physically tougher than us,” said Head Coach Paul Preston.

Yakima scored first in what was shaping up to be a defensive battle late in the second half. The Rams came right back and scored on a Brian Bailey touchdown to answer with 2:53 remaining in the half, and appeared as though halftime would see the teams tied at 7-7. But the Rams kickoff landed the ball out of bounds, giving the Mavericks offense a short field to work with. And after a late hit penalty, and an offsides on 4^th down that kept the drive alive, Yakima found the endzone again before halftime.

The second half saw Yakima continue to score, and move the ball against a Rams defense that until this game hadn’t yielded any points. The Rams also found themselves behind on the scoreboard for the first time this year and could not muster enough offense to overcome the strong play of the Mavericks.

Wenatchee also suffered several rib injuries during the game, and might have lost NT Adam Gordon to a knee injury.

“They played really physical and we didn’t answer the call. They hit really hard. Their secondary is probably as good and maybe even better than last year’s (AFA National Champions) Eastside Hawks,” said Coach Preston.

The Rams continue west-division league play next week against the Tri City Knights on Saturday 4/16 at 6:00 pm at the Apple Bowl in Wenatchee. Both teams are 1-1 in Evergreen Football League play, and are currently tied for 2^nd in the west division.
