Getting The Most Economical Comfort From Your Air Conditioner

That title is not an oxymoron. You can enjoy the comfort of air conditioning without taking out a second mortgage to pay the energy bill, according to the members of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, Upstate New York chapter.

The first suggestion from the  professionals who install and service air conditioners is that you set the thermostat at a comfortable temperature and then leave it at that temperature. This is true regardless of whether you have a programmable or a manual thermostat.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that it is more economical to raise the thermostat setting when you are not home so the air conditioning won’t come on as often. Energy researchers have found, however, that it takes more energy to cool a home than you save by not using the air conditioner.

Just the opposite is true for heat. In the winter, programming the thermostat to lower the temperature at night and when you are away is fine in the winter. But, changing settings in the summer will not conserve energy.

While the thermostat is in plain view and easily adjustable, the system’s air filter may be harder to find. A dirty or clogged filter can also contribute to unnecessary energy consumption. ACCA members recommend checking your filter at least once a month. Clean or replace it if dust and dirt are slowing down airflow.

ACCA membership is your heating and air conditioning contractor’s symbol of quality. For even greater confidence, ask if your contractor employs technicians who are NATE certified in the services you need. For more information, visit www.accaupstateny.org.
