"The Rise and Fall of the
Patriots"
by Rob Winters
It never ceases to amaze me how the Lord
faithfully continues to exhort and warn our rebellious nation. In days gone by, He would consistently speak
through His vessels; honored and anointed men and women of God, who now in many
cases have remained silent or have been ignored in America. Since we will not listen to His servants, in
His mercy, He continues to speak through our idols. Yes, God can speak to America even through a
football game, and has done so on occasion through other major sporting events over
the years. Indeed, there is a parabolic
meaning to the Giants surprise 17-14 upset
victory over the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
Matthew 13:13,15 “I speak to them
in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor
do they understand . . . For the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their
eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their
ears, lest they should understand with their heard and turn, so that I should
heal them.”
Unfortunately, the vast majority of
America and even the Church are blind and hardened to the Lord’s call to
repentance and warning of imminent judgment through this prophetic sign.
The Pride of the Patriots
Americans are winners. We patriotically pride ourselves at being
“the best of the best”, being undefeated and invincible, whether it be in
business, battle or baseball. We
Americans pride ourselves on our greatness, but fail to remember what made this
country great. In essence, as a nation
we have forgotten about God and broken our covenant with Him through our lack of
devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ and our pursuit of idols.
Genesis 17:14 “And the uncircumcised male child, who is not
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his
people; he has broken My covenant.
Scripture and history bear out that God
resists the proud, but gives grace to the meek and humble of heart. Pride and a haughty spirit eventually yield
destruction to nations who repeatedly reject His pleas for repentance. In the
Old Testament, after Israel repeatedly rebelled against the Lord, he allowed
Babylon to overthrow Israel and take them into captivity. They were humbled and eventually restored to
greatness. America is gradually being
humbled by the Lord.
Ezekiel 17:14 “That
the kingdom might be abased and not lift itself up, but that by keeping his
covenant it might stand.”
Facing the Giants
The New York Giants not only mustered a win against the Patriots in
Super Bowl XLII on February 3, 2008, but also during the tragedy in New York on
September 11th, 2001. What we
believed to be impossible and unthinkable became a reality in America almost
seven years ago. Indeed, the glory days
of America have faded and fallen under God’s judgment. We in America have forsaken the God of our
forefathers, broken our covenant with Him, and as a result have forfeited His
covenantal protection and mercy. America
was once “the land of the free’, but now we our being threatened and overrun by
giants; giants of Islam, liberalism, idolatry and debauchery.
The American “dream” has been
transformed from one of opportunity, innovation, contribution and significance,
to one of selfish ambition, covetousness, fame and greed. As a result, judgment has come to America. In the coming months, we will see the idol of
mammon fall as economic and environmental judgments shake the core of our
nation.
Nevertheless, America’s hope still lies
within a rising remnant of faithful, covenant keeping Christians, who continue
to cry out in travail for repentance and revival in our land. These sold-out Christians will become
ambassadors of His power, kingdom and glory, delivering a message and carrying
a mantle of repentance and reconciliation that will administer hope and healing
to a shaken, distraught and bewildered America.
Revelation 17:14 “These will make war with the Lamb, and the
Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and those
who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”
The battle is raging for America, and
it is high time that lukewarm Christians repent and arise from the seat of
complacency to join the remnant of called, chosen and faithful believers and
the Lamb to make war against the enemies of His glory. Indeed, this is our only hope for America to
return to true greatness.
